Entering The Trinity page 1 |
|
After one service we took, I overheard two of the team members talking about a party that one of them was holding and to which the other was invited. Naïvely thinking this would be for everybody in the team, I wandered over and said, "What are you talking about." "Oh, nothing," replied the girl whose party it was. I wanted to be on the inside of the team, but I was firmly kept on the outside. Don't we often want to know what's going on 'on the inside' somewhere? That desire sells newspapers, celebrity magazines, and adds to the viewing figures of certain TV shows. The good news about God the Holy Trinity is that we are not kept on the outside. We are brought inside, not only to witness what is going on in the heart of God who is love, God who is relationship, but also to be part of what is going on there. So this sermon develops further what we talked about last time. Last time I talked about how we become 'co-lovers with God'. I called that 'Joining The Trinity'. Now I want to take things one stage further and talk about what happens when we do more than join: when we enter the Trinity. In other words, what is going on inside the Trinity? Because that will affect us if we have been united with God. Often the clearest way to see this is to look at the way Jesus lived his earthly life, and much of our focus today will be on that. Darrell Johnson in Experiencing The Trinity lists seven words that describe what's going on inside the Trinity, all of which affect us. Let's look at each of the seven briefly.
