I hope I don't have delusions of grandeur, but this morning I feel a bit like the Prime Minister. No, I haven't decided to declare war on anyone. But today's passage and theme have put me in mind of Prime Minister's Questions.

If you have ever watched or listened to PMQs you'll know that MPs tend to ask a standard initial question such as, "What are the Prime Minister's appointments for today?" When the first MP asks that question, Tony Blair duly gives a list of his diary commitments. The MP then follows up with a question asking the Prime Minister if, during the day, he will give some consideration to a particular issue.

After various questions from other MPs and general bear-baiting (well, it might just as well be) the MP with the second tabled question asks his or question. Often it is the same: "What are the Prime Minister's appointments for today?" The reply will come back, "I refer my Honourable Friend (or the Honourable Member) to the reply I gave earlier."

And that's where I feel like the Prime Minister today. I would like to refer you to a reply I gave earlier. Last week, in fact. The passage allocated to me today in Matthew's Gospel is very similar to one in Luke's Gospel that the Rainham congregation asked me to preach on last Sunday. So it crossed my mind that I could print off last Sunday's sermon from my website, hand out copies to you all this morning, and go home and start cooking Sunday lunch earlier.

I haven't done that. I thought I'd give an illusion of working for my money. This week I'll explore these verses in terms of seeing them as a warning to us about the ways in which we might be unprepared for the return of Christ.
