Now - I wonder what sense of humour the Tuesday Cell Group who are leading this service has: a fortnight ago I preach on the Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds, with the dreaded line where eternal judgement is described as 'weeping and gnashing of teeth' and guess what: the Tuesday Cell pick the other parable with exactly the same punch line. What's going on there, then? Does somebody here relish hearing about divine judgement? Or is God trying to tell us something?

Seriously, there are of course some major parallels with The Wheat and the Weeds. There is an ingathering - this time a harvest of the sea not of the land, and there are two groups with distinct and opposite fates. And - as I said - the punch line for those who suffer condemnation is exactly the same.

So it did cross my mind I could get out that last sermon and just change one or two words - substitute 'fish' for 'wheat' or 'weeds', and so on. Then I changed my mind. There will be similarities to some extent, but I'm going to find my way in by a different method, although I will - as with the other parables - concentrate on the main characters or symbols in the story.
