Acts 2:1-21 page 1

Some schoolchildren had learned to recite the Creed, each child in turn saying a phrase. One day they were to show off their skill to the visiting vicar. But when they got to 'I believe in the Holy Spirit' it all ground to a halt.

After an embarrassing silence, one child said to the vicar, "I'm sorry, sir, the boy who believes in the Holy Spirit isn't here today."

Sometimes you might wonder the same in the church. Where are those who believe in the Holy Spirit? Oh, we all believe in the Holy Spirit, but it takes much more than an academic belief. And the real embarrassment is the comparison between ourselves and the early church. Not that they were perfect, but they turned their world upside-down, whereas we allow our world to turn us upside-down.

Pentecost, then, is a good time to evaluate whether we see the same signs of the Holy Spirit at work in our midst as the early Christians did. Here are four of the signs. Let's measure ourselves up against these.
