'Alternative worship' - like 'postmodernism', it's an expression that sounds like it is defined more by what it is not than what it is. More positively, alternative worship tends to embrace values that are positive to postmoderns. Generally speaking, it is: multi-sensory and multi-media - in contrast to traditional
'aural' Protestant worship Like the links page of postmodern Christian sites, what follows is just a selection from my Favorites folder. Happy surfing will take you to many other sites. All locations are in the UK unless otherwise stated. Some of these sites come and go, so please post a note at Respond on this site if a site no longer exists. Thanks. Abundant - Long-established clubbing-style approach to worship. The Alternative Internet Site - Youth worship in Blackpool. Alternative Worship FAQ - Compiled by Paul Roberts, former lecturer in Liturgy and Doctrine at Trinity College, Bristol, and seasoned alternative worship practitioner. Alternativeworship.org - Portal run by Paul Roberts (see above) and Steve Collins of Small Fire and Grace (see below). The Cube - Online worship experience devised by some of the 'HOST' people (see below). Grace - Well-known worship event in west London. HOST - Alternative worship collective in Bradford. Kenosis - Christian community in San Francisco. Klisia - The 'Moot' alternative worship event in central London. Labyrinth - An ancient tool popularly revived for worship. The Mass - Collective running alternative worship of varying styles from week to week in Derbyshire. New Worship - Robert E Webber's site. Webber is too old to be postmodern, but too clued up on the history of Christian worship to be anything less than profound. His books, such as 'The Younger Evangelicals' and 'Ancient-Future Faith', are well worth hunting down at Amazon. If their UK site doesn't have them in stock, the American Amazon site almost certainly will. One Small Barking Dog - Multimedia resources for worship. The Prodigal Project - Tied in with the book of the same name by Mike Riddell, Mark Pierson, and Cathy Kirkpatrick, published in the UK by SPCK. Resonance Bristol - The community of which Paul Roberts (see above) is a part. The Scriptorium - 'Building blocks for creative worship'. Small Fire - Site consisting largely of photographs taken at various alternative worship events. Vaux - Event in Vauxhall, south London. Visions - Community and weekly worship that have come out of the well-known St Michael-le-Belfry church in York. Community member Sue Wallace has written two excellent resource books, 'Multi-Sensory Prayer' And 'Multi-Sensory Worship', both published by Scripture Union.
